Our Blog - Normandy 2023 - Omaha Beach, France

One of closest beaches to where we stayed our first week was Omaha Beach. Not only is it one of the 5 beach landing sectors for the amphibious assault during Operation Overlord (the D-day landings) in WW II, but it also is puppy-friendly!! Omaha referred to a 5-mile section from Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes to Vierville-sur-Mer. It is on this American sector that the number of allied casualties was highest, with around 2,000 soldiers killed or wounded during the invasion. Many soldiers drowned during the approach from ships offshore or were killed by defending fire from German troops surrounding the beach.

Nothing but sun and a cool breeze for us, walking along the beach at what I can only imagine was low tide. It was interesting walking there because at time, we had to backtrack (or get our feet wet) because there are little streams and ponds of water. I also tried to get pictures to give a sense of how massive this beach is. There are a few concrete structures that we could see that we assumed were remains of German outposts.

And finally, a video of Lucy storming the beach!
