Our Blog - Mouret Beach in Leucate

A few pictures on the way down, showing the Pyrénées with snow at the top. The pictures aren't great as we were driving, but still not bad.

And these pictures were impressive to me ... the Pyrénées as seen from the beach itself. I can't really remember seeing snow-capped mountains from a beach (I'm sure there are others, however).

A little about the beach .. there are several different "named" beaches at Leucate, with the sand stretching about 3 kilometers. There is a little peninsula between the Étang de Leucate (étang is a pond, although this to me was more the size of a small lake) and the Mediterranean Sea, which is basically all natural area. We parked at the middle car park and headed out to the beach. We have a few pictures of Lucy as she first discovers sand, and then a couple videos.

At the end of this one is hilarious ... she doesn't really want to get her feet wet.

One thing that I had found out about during all of my research into the beach is that there is an oyster park at the south end of the Mouret beach, just before the nude beach area (where, incidentally, puppies are not allowed!). There are large oyster farms out in the Étang de Leucate and every day, the various oyster producers harvest from their areas and bring the fresh oysters back to little shacks to sell. There are probably 25 or 30 different shacks, and I think all of them have tables and chairs so that you can eat them right there. Most also do other kinds of shellfish ... shrimp, snails, etc ... but we went straight for the oysters. Nothing fancy here ... concrete floors and plastic chairs, but the oysters are amazingly fresh. We went with 6 of the next-to-largest ones, and they were huge! We added a nice bottle of the local rosé wine and voila ... lunch!
