Our Blog - Bretagne Trip - Summer 2021 - Carnac, FranceWe had visited the town of Carnac in 2020, but stopped by to go inside the church again and to grab something to eat before our tour of the Carnac Stones. The main church is the Église Saint-Cornély, which dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. It is dedicated to Saint Cornély, the protector of horned beasts. The exterior is rather plain, with the exception of the porch on the north side. It is surmounted by a granite canopy in the shape of a crown, and was added in 1792.
Here you get a view of the interior, which is quite low compared to many of the churches we've been inside in Europe. There is the main aisle with Romanesque (rounded) arches separating it from the side aisles. The most impressive part of this little village church are the ceilings! The vaults of the naves are in polychrome paneling presenting paintings relating the life of Saint Cornély, with some of the panels still showing their 1732 creation date.
Most of the stained-glass dates from 1891 and were created by an artisan in Vannes. Some of them were paid for by donations from individuals, and those are actually noted within the stained glass itself.
Altar and altarpiece of the Rosary.
One of the notable pieces is the 18th organ.
