Our Blog - Beach near Landunvez

I mentioned the coastline and our walks, and this is another morning on the Atlantic coast. This one is near Landunvez, which encompasses quite a bit of coastal area.

As we walked along the beach, we saw a couple old blockhouses from the World War II. When the Germans turned their focus from France to Russia, they left a few dozen divisions on the Western coast of France. To prevent an expected landing of the Allied forces, they built a set of fortifications called the "Atlantic Wall". Coastal batteries were built at key locations of the coasts, to protect ports or estuaries.

The Atlantic coast of Brittany is an interesting mix of white sand beaches and huge granite formations. Lucy decided she wanted to check out one of the rock formations. You can see in the last picture how the beach basically gets cut off with these huge rock masses.

Here you can get a view from a bit further way, up on the dunes. You have white sand that stretches for miles, with these huge rock formations stuck in the middle here and there. Then as you move back away from the beach, you have dunes covered with wispy grasses. We came across a big snail that was there as well.
