Our Blog - Brélès, Frances

The village of Brélès is quite small ... less than 1,000 people live there. We didn't actually see much of the town but we went one day for what is called a "Noce Breton". We had seen the signs along the road announcing this, and a couple people had mentioned it, so we decided to see what it was about.

The town of Brelez seems to have a "Noce Breton" every year in August, which recreates a Breton wedding from the 1st half of the 20th century. It starts with a mass of forgiveness, and then a parade with the newlyweds, in traditional Breton dress seated in a horse-drawn wagon followed by the procession of guests. This little parade passes through the town, stopping every once in awhile for music and dancing. There is then a traditional lunch (which you can buy a ticket for) and an afternoon with additional festivities.

Here you can see the crowds lining the roads and you can see the band members down at the end. The video then has them playing as they come up the road towards us.

Then the newlyweds in the old-fashioned carriage. They do this every year it would seem, and I'm not how the newlyweds are chosen. I've seen pictures of prior years and the people are different, but I don't know if they are actually married or newlyweds or just people chosen to play a role.

Then the procession of guests, all dressed in traditional clothing.

The last video is a set of ladies dancing.
