Our Blog - Summer 2024 Trip - St Peters Village in Broadstairs, England

We had signed up for a historical walking tour of St Peters Village, which is now a "suburb" of Broadstairs. Historically, they were both small villages but Broadstairs has basically grown and "eaten" St Peters Village. Unfortunately for us, the weather was bad and so the walking-tour-around-town ended up being done inside of the church.

The village and its church, named for Saint Peter, was established back around 1050. The church is mostly in the Norman period architectural style. The South aisle was the first chapel at St Peters, standing alone, but the church was enlarged to the north in 1180-1185. The present building has a late Norman nave and an Early English Chancel. The battlemented tower and the south porch are in the Perpendicular architectural style from the 15th Century. Extensive restoration work was carried out between 1860 and 1900. The stained glass windows and mosaics date from this period.
